S.A.I.L. Student Art Innovation Lab
Student Art Innovation Lab (S.A.I.L.) is an award-winning community arts outreach program housed within the Fine Arts Department at the University of Waterloo. S.A.I.L. is both art lab/studio and mobile art gallery, facilitating events throughout the summer in the Waterloo Region. Our programs not only stimulate community engagement in the arts but also provide experientially-based learning opportunities for the students hired to run S.A.I.L.—a nod to the university’s standing as offering the world’s largest co-op program. Launched in 2017, SAIL now boasts 30 community partners and has completed close to 150 events serving more than 20,000 participants. As a non-profit organization, S.A.I.L. is supported through the Chalmers Foundations, an endowment held by the University of Waterloo.
Curatorial Statement
HANDIWORK draws on traditional skills long associated with domestic labour, including cooking, sewing, weaving, embroidery, and needlework. The term refers to the act of making and to the things produced; household items that are not only practical, but also deeply personal, shaping our living spaces into places we belong. Historically, often overlooked or undervalued, these practices have existed outside the canon of “high art”. Recently, however, such modes of making have gained renewed significance. Acts of mending and repair being ways of caring for what we already own, while hand-based processes offer more sustainable and mindful alternatives to mass production. In this context, handiwork reminds us of the emotional, cultural, and social value embedded in everyday creative labour. The artworks presented this year engage with the idea of HANDIWORK across a range of themes such as resilience, identity, feminism, and decoration. They remind us that the handmade can be transformative and empowering.
