S.A.I.L. Student Art Innovation Lab
Student Art Innovation Lab (S.A.I.L.) is an award-winning community arts outreach program run by Fine Arts at the University of Waterloo. As a non-profit initiative, it is supported by the Chalmers Family Arts and Culture Experience Award Endowment Fund. Operating as both an art studio and mobile gallery, S.A.I.L. delivers arts programming across the Waterloo Region while providing hands-on learning opportunities for student staff, a nod to the university’s standing as the world’s largest co-op program. Since launching in 2017, S.A.I.L. has partnered with 30 community organizations, hosted 150 events, and engaged more than 20,000 participants.
Curatorial Statement
HANDIWORK draws on the traditions of domestic labour, including cooking, washing, needlework, and weaving. Referring both to the act of making and the objects produced, the term suggests household items that are simultaneously practical and deeply personal. Historically overlooked within the canon of “high art,” the domestic becomes an act of resistance set against mass consumption and the pervasiveness of digital technology. The artworks in this exhibition explore themes of resilience, identity, consumption, feminism, and decoration, positioning the handmade as a space for care, empowerment, and political expression.
