Born and raised in the Philippines, Sheryl moved to Fredericton, NB in June 2024 to pursue a two-year diploma in Ceramics at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design.
Her passion for tea was her impetus to pursue the artist’s life. Following a millennia-long line of tea ware artisans, she sought to explore the shapes, forms, textures, and techniques of tea ware-making. Working with porcelain, she has a special interest in ancient glazes like Tenmoku, Oribe, Celadon, and Shino. She works to contemporize these by layering with the ones she currently develops. She is also fascinated by crystalline glazes, an exclusive collection of which will be showcased at TOAF65.
She is proud and inspired by the Philippines' ancient gold-craft tradition transposing techniques like the filigree and granulation onto clay birthing a new way to showcase traditional jewellery designs with a new material. It is her way of reconnecting with her precolonial ancestors and reclaiming her ancient heritage in gold-craft.
Since 2019, she has exhibited in various group and duo shows in the Philippines and Canada.
