July 10-12, 2026 | Nathan Phillips Square

A painting of a suburban backyard lit by the single bulb of a porch light. A plastic muskoka chair in the center of the yard is brightly lit, while the trees and the garage further back become obscured by shadows.

After Hours

Artist
Francesco Paonessa
Description
The porch light was activated by me opening the door, and the more I looked at what was lit by that bulb, the more I felt the stillness of the night. The usual rumbling sounds of the neighbourhood were muted or gone, replaced by the skree-ing of nighttime insects. Everything in this space is familiar to me, but the difference from day to night made me take in the details once again.
