Supriya James
Supriya James is a Toronto-based contemporary landscape artist of Indo-Guyanese heritage. After a successful career as a Communications Consultant, with over 25 years of working in public relations, government, politics and the news media, she is furthering her proclivity for expression by undertaking another undergraduate degree at OCAD University, Toronto, Ontario (Drawing & Painting Program, 2021-2025 - BFA Hon).
Her body of work comprises paintings of Canadian and Guyanese landscapes, as well as figures within the landscape. These visual images are embedded with political and metaphysical explorations of identity, ancestral history, and temporality that have formed her core consciousness.
Her artworks are inspired by her own digital photography. They enmesh her Indo-Guyanese and Canadian heritages via the usage of Western art tools in a contemporary way, abstracted form, and a palette of unnatural, bold colours - all reflecting the state of cultural hybridity in which she lives. Ground turmeric spice is used as a painting material and it is integrated with acrylic paint, oil paint, and acrylic stains. Additionally, willow charcoal, compressed charcoal, and chalk pastels function as mark-making methods to connect the viewer to the natural environment and its immediate need of stewardship.
