I’m an encaustic artist based in Ottawa.
I’m deeply interested in psychology, and the turbulent inner world of emotions. I combine photocopied 19th century engravings, my own drawings and photographs, and melted beeswax (encaustic) to creative evocative, symbolic representations of psychological experiences.
My current work explores my experiences with anxiety. People with anxiety have an extreme fear of uncertainty. They avoid it at all costs, and structure their lives to avoid risks and make the world feel safe and under control. But this sense of safety can eventually become a prison where one finds oneself trapped, too afraid to venture out and try anything new or uncertain.
I’m interested in the tension between fear and safety, and constraint and freedom. I use ordered systems such as grids, patterns, and architecture and play with the balance between rigidly following a system, being creative within a system, and breaking free from a system entirely.
