Olivia Hamza
Moved by the creeping sedation of our increasingly homogenized world culture, Olivia Hamza’s oil paintings question whether race is even real. Informed by philosophy and sociology, and referencing orientalism and pre-raphaelite’s movements, Olivia’s work juxtaposes concepts and abstractions of cultural performance to depict surreal situations. Her cinematographic compositions reframe colonial iconography, explore culture shock, and examine the commercialisation of culture.
But why? Because the artist’s French-Canadian-Egyptian background, and her frequent travels have exposed the fluidity of racial perception based on where you are in the world, and who is looking. A reality which has left her asking: How is this institution still standing?
Olivia’s work has been exhibited at the Museum de Arte Contemporaneo in Monterrey, Mexico, and Pictoplasma Gallery in Berlin, and is collected internationally.
