Michael Bedford is an emerging oil painter living in Toronto, Canada.

His paintings explore figuration and still life through a modern lens. He uses quick, expressive brushstrokes, focusing primarily on the physicality of the paint and capturing the duality of light and shadow.

Having studied neuroscience and psychology before becoming a painter, he’s endlessly fascinated with the human psyche, including how we live in relation to others, as well as with to ourselves.

"As technology advances, we find ourselves less and less in touch with what fundamentally makes us human and connects us, both to the earth and to each other. I think this has some important consequences that are worth thinking about."

His most recent work explore themes of desire, isolation, and the Jungian shadow, asking: How is it that the promise of a more connected world has left many of us feeling more alone than ever?
