Laura Thompson
Laura Thompson is an award-winning mixed media collage artist based in Harrisonburg, Virginia, USA. Her work combines carefully cut vintage magazine imagery with painted backgrounds to create surreal, dreamlike scenes that are both playful and a little off-kilter.
Growing up in a wealthy suburb of Rochester, NY, she became aware early on of the contradictions of privilege, developing a sense of humor and sarcasm that now runs through her work. After years of teaching middle school art, she began bringing those themes more directly into her own practice.
In addition to showing her work nationally, she spends much of her time painting murals, translating her collage style into large-scale environments that transform public spaces and invite curiosity, humor, and closer looking.
