Stella Coultas
I revel in creating an abstract, surreal world that defies the senses. Light and shadow are my inspiration and obsession — the means through which we interpret the visual world and physically situate ourselves in it. My photographs blur the boundary between the real and the ethereal by giving substance to shadows. They are vibrant and dynamic, but also ambiguous and disorienting. In this sense they reflect the experience of trying to navigate through an increasingly artificial world.
To create this series, I made 3-dimensional still life arrangements using cut-out cardboard, my drawings and photo prints, then photographed them in bright, oblique light. Some of the colours have been digitally-adjusted.
