Nancy Byrtus
Nancy Byrtus is an emerging abstract and landscape artist who works predominantly in oils and acrylics. With a background in historic building preservation and roles at galleries and museums, she completed the Fine Arts programme at Emily Carr University of Art + Design in 2020. Having lived in Toronto as well as cities across Canada, the US and Europe, in 2021 she established a studio in Vancouver. This fall, she looks forward to adding to her portfolio during her time at the Similkameen Artist Residency in British Columbia.
Nancy's artwork at TOAF features vivid and playful abstractions of natural forms. Most paintings in this series began as a study of mountain peaks and evolved to celebrate the tiny geometries visible in semiprecious stones. While the paintings play with scale and abstraction, there is a timestamp to them as well; their colours and patterns nod in appreciation to Mid-century design. Taken together, this combination of influences presents the viewer with images that are both colourful and light-hearted.
