Madeleine LeBrun
Madeleine LeBrun is a Toronto-based artist and illustrator who works in plasticine bas-relief sculpture and digital photocollage. The works shown here were produced using a technique called “nerikomi,” whereby canes of different-coloured clay are stacked and sliced to create a pattern. This series reflects on our contemporary internet-based pop culture, where memes replicate and spread like fungus and everything feels like a copy of a copy. Familiar characters from entertainment media are warped and reconstituted to create works of art that border on abstraction, while the reference remains intact; meanwhile, the nerikomi process of analog image reproduction abstracts the hand of the artist to comment on creativity and originality in the Digital Age.
