K MacLean
Winner of TOAF -Best in 3 dimensional work - in both 2023 and 2025
Oddment artist K MacLean is a Halifax based sculpture artist who primarily uses found and repurposed objects ranging from oceanwood, wire, antique clock mechanisms, and industrial surplus to doll arms, to create both social commentary pieces and satirical interpretations of WW2 warships that are loosely inspired by the folly of military history. In the last five years he has incorporated clay and watercolor into his arts practice as well and travel to several arts residencies in Berlin, Scotland and New Brunswick has influenced his work immensely.
"By incorporating found and repurposed materials —whether it's a piece of driftwood or a gear from a cuckoo clock—stories emerge organically, either through my own research or through the personal interpretations of viewers, who bring their own experiences and curiosity to the work. Creating from disparate objects considered disposable, and objects found on those walks, into a recognizable form requires the engagement of both the viewer and the artist’s imagination and pays homage to the stories that overlooked objects can tell.
