We can see behind a venetian blind because our mind fills in the gaps. Amazing! Since then, I have applied much effort to understanding and exploring the magical ability. I have omitted parts of the pears in the Pears painting so that viewers can imagine their beauty in absentia. In the Hustle painting, I jammed the bustling travelers into each other to illustrate the heat and discomfort of the sweaty crowd. In Mission, many people are in a pressing, highly charged setting, likely delivering on a common cause.
I paint images in alternate horizontal strips, enticing the viewer to “see with the mind”. Akin to seeing through venetian blinds, the mind fills in the blanks to perceive the entire picture. In the process, the viewer participates in the making of the image, and it in turn comes alive in the mind.
