Description

One of the 12 Chinese Zodiac Animals, this ox image comes from the mural in Dunhuang Mogao Caves, dating back to the 7th Century AD. Its simple contour and powerful strokes remind of the works of Pablo Picasso, yet it has proceeded them by more than 1000 years. Coloured in Chinese ink and natural mineral pigments and painted on clay base made of earth from Dunhuang, this work retains the authentic skills, materials, techniques and process that has been employed by the artisans in early Tang era.
