Yu-Sheng Chiu
Yu-Sheng Chiu (b.1999) is an Ottawa-based photographic artist born and raised in Taiwan. She uses self-portraiture to explore how solitude, memories, and the ever-changing definition of femininity have constructed her understanding of the world as a Taiwanese woman in the geopolitical and psychological contexts. Notions of aloneness and navigation inform her practice of examining human forms and landscape that creates hospitable, home-like spaces to exist within. Using medium and large format film with an illustrative approach, she enhances her predominantly analog practice by including multi-disciplinary elements into the abstract relationship between body and belonging.
Yu-Sheng earned a diploma in Photographic Arts and Production from SPAO: Photographic Arts Centre in 2023 and is expected to receive her Bachelor of Fine Arts from University of Ottawa by 2026. With her unique educational background and professional experiences, Yu-Sheng is excited to bring a fresh perspective to the Canadian art scene and beyond while continuing to grow with her peers. Her work can be found on TOAF64's curated collections, "Made This to be Heard" and "Crossing" along with her website and selected prints available at Wall Space Gallery, Ottawa.
