Wensi Li
I am Wensi Li, a Toronto-based textile artist who holds MFA in Interdisciplinary Master’s in Art, Media and Design Program at OCAD University. I identify and position my textile work in a historical and contemporary context as an Asian background woman living in Toronto immersed in both eastern and western cultures to explore my identity in this multi-culture community. My silk art was developed from my unique textile design method that derived from the oriental culture, the motifs of traditional Chinese needlework, Japanese ceramics, and potteries.
I am using my silk art to explore my social identity as an Asian woman living in Toronto immersed in both eastern and western cultures. I tear up my original cultural identity into pieces and then patch them together within a contemporary Canadian context. This deconstruct-reconstruct process is my daily questioning about how to exist and identify myself in this multi-culture western community as a woman with my textile practice.
