Stephen Perry
My work explores the intersections of nature, humanity, and technology through paintings that blend stylized realism, humour, and social commentary. I create scenes that are like fragments of larger stories—moments suspended in time where animals, people, landscapes, and cultural icons occupy unexpected relationships. Using cinematic compositions and symbolic imagery, I invite viewers into narratives that remain deliberately open-ended. Humour often provides the point of entry, while deeper themes of connection, identity, and our evolving relationship with the natural world unfold beneath the surface. Rather than offering fixed meanings, I aim to create paintings that encourage curiosity, reflection, and personal interpretation.
I paint in oils, using the medium's inherent properties to create subtle gradations of colour, light, and shadow. The flexibility of oil paint allows me to carefully control the blending of edges, creating a sense of depth, atmosphere, and stillness.
Each artist will bring their own unique background to their process. My background in film and photography brings that visual sensibility to the paintings.
