Rylan Cocks
Approaching his practice with maximalist sensibilities such as over-patterning, seductive glimmers of metallics, and animal prints, Rylan foregrounds a question of taste. This question is not so much imposed on what is good and bad, but rather how taste is inevitably decided by the individual. Grounding his work in ceramic art history through the scope of kitsch and decorative is integral to his practice. Inspired by baroque aesthetics, Rylan combats the perceived value of this period by marrying it with humorous everyday pop culture, also playing into the permanency of ceramics. Rylan’s work continues to be an exuberant extension of his own existence, advocating for personal taste and celebrating self expression.
