Rutu Palav
A seasoned calligrapher and graphic designer, I hold a Master's in Graphic Design and Digital Media from the prestigious Academy of Art University in San Francisco.
Growing up, I watched my father, Master Calligrapher Achyut Palav, breathe life into letters: on walls, fabrics, canvases, and sometimes even the most unexpected surfaces with absurd tools. But this deeply impacted me and hence, it was only natural that I gravitated toward the art of calligraphy.
Over the years, I’ve worked to hone my skills, particularly in Devanagari calligraphy, a script I find endlessly captivating. For me, it’s more than just beautiful writing; it’s about understanding each letter that has its character, and that, when put with other complimenting letters, comes together to tell a story. I’ve explored both traditional and experimental tools and mediums, pushing the boundaries of what Devanagari calligraphy can be.
Yet, despite all the experimentation, I often return to the basics: ink, paper, and a pen. To me, it is a holy and grounding process that not only connects me to my craft but also to myself. In these moments, I’m reminded that calligraphy isn’t just an art form, it’s a way of being, learning, and reflecting.
