Melissa Morrow
By cutting birds and geese from my paintings and sewing them into dynamic compositions, I create pieces that are rich in commentary and often touched with humor. I’m exploring gender and materials based hierarchies within the art world. Does the inclusion of painted "fine art" elevate the perceived value of these sewn pieces, or does it challenge outdated notions of artistic worth? My work invites viewers to reflect on these questions while enjoying the playful interplay of materials and ideas.
Toronto artist Melissa Morrow is a passionate maker, always dreaming of the next adventure. After earning an Honours degree in Fine Art History and Psychology from the University of Toronto, Melissa completed a diploma in Furniture Craft and Design from Sheridan College.
Melissa then balanced motherhood with working part time as an entrepreneur with her own creative company - ME*MO. Selling online and in shows such as the One of a Kind Show, Melissa designed and sewed contemporary housewares and accessories utilizing remnant commercial upholstery materials and leathers that were designated for landfill. For a change in pace, Melissa took a painting class and it was a medium she instantly connected with. She continues to paint and develop her practice while participating in juried shows and various outdoor tours, and also serves as the Co-Chair of the North Toronto Group of Artists.
