Margriet Hogue is a visual artist based in central Alberta, on Treaty 6 and 7 territories and the homeland of the Métis Nation. Born in the Netherlands, she spent her formative years in Venezuela before immigrating to Canada. She studied textiles and design at Olds College, and weaving at the Banff Centre for the Arts. In 1989, Hogue established a needlework business that specializes in researching and reproducing antique samplers, and offers workshops across Northern America as well as online. Her turn toward abstract painting was inspired by the freedom it offered from the structure and minutiae of her needlework and weaving background. An avid learner, she has taken numerous artist-led courses and workshops. Hogue’s mixed media paintings and sculptures have been featured in solo and two-person exhibitions at Riverlands Gallery, Red Deer; Art Gallery of St. Albert; Harris–Warke Gallery, Red Deer; VASA Art Gallery, St. Albert; Kiwanis Art Gallery, Red Deer; and Spruce Grove Art Gallery; as well as in numerous juried group exhibitions. Several of her artworks have been featured in Creative Quarterly, and in 2018, she was the inaugural recipient of the Artwalk Developing Visual Artist Award from the City of Red Deer. Hogue is a member of the Abstract’d Art Collective.
