Kat Hernden
Inspired by patterns found in nature, in architecture and on bathroom floors, self-taught, Kitchener-based artist, Kat Hernden, creates geometric works of art using acrylics and embroidery thread on canvas. Hernden uses masking techniques when applying the paint to the canvas. This allows her to achieve those complex geometric shapes and radial patterns. Most of the line work is then embroidered. Using long stitches Hernden creates perfectly straight lines that coalesce and diverge throughout the composition. Variations in value are created by the proximity of the threads. The application of traditional craft processes to the canvas, a spot usually reserved for painting, challenges the conventional notions of what qualifies for art and what qualifies as craft. It also adds a human, feminine touch to what otherwise could be perceived as sterile or digital.
