John Krizan
John Krizan built a 15 year career as an automotive mechanic—solving problems, and working with his hands. In 2009, seeking a new direction, he took an elective glassblowing class that changed everything. As he watched molten glass respond to gravity, heat, and breath, he recognized the same spirit of craftsmanship and curiosity that once drove his work with engines. John’s mechanical background continues to inform his creative process, “In both, I use my mind and my hands together to make something happen.”
His work explores the ties between natural forces and material transformation. Drawing from the scientific tradition behind glass formulation and colour chemistry, he experiments with metals such as gold, silver, and copper to create distinctive colour reactions. He uses gravity, heat, and centrifugal force—to create forms and organic patterns inspired by nature.
Originally from Iowa, John now lives in the territory of the lək̓ʷəŋən speaking peoples, also known as Victoria, BC. He pursues his fascination for glass as a member of the Terminal City Glass Co-op in Vancouver, where he continues to explore glass chemistry and form.
