Janet Read is a painter who has exhibited widely in public and commercial galleries. Ocean as Vessel, was a two gallery solo exhibition at the Robert McLaughlin Gallery with a catalogue by David Aurandt. The Art Gallery of Peterborough, Varley Gallery, Latcham Gallery, Visual Arts Centre of Clarington, Whitby Station Gallery, and the Art Gallery of Northumberland have exhibited her work.

Travels in the high arctic in 2018 initiated a new ongoing body of work, oil and graphite on duralar, and oil on linen, titled High Arctic Light, consisting of paintings, works on duralar and small bookworks. Abstraction capturing the essence of atmosphere and light is the heart of her art practice.

Read holds a BA in philosophy, English and medieval studies from U of Toronto and pursued art studies at York U. Burning questions about abstraction in art prompted an MA in the philosophy of art. A book of poetry developed along the way, and she has worked as a music educator for many years. With deep roots in the Ottawa Valley, Belfast and County Wexford, Ireland, she loves fiddle music, poetry and the sea.
