Edith Kernerman (she/her) is a Canadian-born artist working in mixed-media sculpture installation, painting, photography, drawing, and digital media. She obtained her AOCA in Sculpture, Drawing/Painting from the Ontario College of Art and studied at St. Martin’s School of Art in London, UK. After sustaining injuries in a car accident in 2001 that affected her depth perception, hand-eye coordination, and strength in her hands, Kernerman stopped making art completely in 2002. Eighteen years later she decided it was time to face the challenges and make art once again.

Since 2020, She has been sculpting with broken glass, painting in oils and mixed media, making digital works on her iPad, photographing the world around her. Her latest adventure has been creating a new way of showing 2-D work: imprinting images into the back of annealed glass, then painting or drawing behind that transparent image to make a piece that is unique. these pieces have a depth that drawings/paintings/mixed media on paper or canvas do not.

“I have always been intrigued by pathways, doorways, tunnels, and entranceways because they show us a journey someone else has already taken. They leave behind footprints, not always visible, but footprints nevertheless of how that journey unfolded. This provides an opportunity for someone else to follow in that path but to experience it in a different way from others before.

“That opening viewed from afar holds mystery of what is on the other side as we cross over a threshold. These thresholds, for me, can be windows into the past or windows into a future. They give us an opportunity to delve into that future or recreate that past—not to recreate it as though we can change what happened in the past but reconstruct it so that we can bring it into our future in the way that we feel comfortable, especially if it was a difficult past.”

Kernerman has had solo and group exhibitions at various galleries and institutions in Toronto, New York, London, and Shanghai. Her work is in private, corporate, and public collections in Canada, the US, UK, France, China, Australia, and Japan.

All works are unique and finished by hand. Some pieces can be ordered in different sizes. Each piece has been registered on the blockchain and comes with a certificate of authenticity.
