Deidre Wicks
I draw animals because animals make me happy. In an earlier life I was a fashion designer so texture, colour and shape have always inspired my work. When I started to study art seriously animals were a natural fit because they’re all about texture, colour and shape. I’ve tried many times to make “serious” art but I’ve never been any good at it. I’ve discovered that art can, and should, be fun. Fun to design, fun to make and most importantly, fun to look at. While I built my career with watercolour I’m now using coloured pencil as my predominate medium. The colours and textures I can create are endless. My process involves the initial inspiration and then hours and hours of drawing. Coloured pencil is not a fast medium! I build my texture slowly with lots of layers. I use a mixture of wax and oil-based coloured pencils on a smooth cotton paper. Lastly and most importantly, my personal assistant Mitzi the Cat gives her final blessing to every illustration I sell.
