Naomi Ortiz is a student in York University’s visual arts programme and was born and raised in Toronto. She feels that the unique ways that identity and community manifest in the most multicultural city in the world has made a significant contribution to the current subject matter of her work.
Naomi has been captivated by portraits for as long as she can remember. In the present day, this fascination is evident in her paintings of familial and domestic scenes which examine ideas of perception, identity, and connectedness. Naomi works mainly in oil paints and uses this medium to emulate her vision of nostalgia, inspired by the flash-photographs of her own childhood, taken by a digital Canon camera. Naomi likes to combine a dulled and earthy colour palette with the dramatic shadows often found in amateur flash photography to emulate the threshold-like quality of a memory, but also uses hints of warmth throughout her work to give voice to the materiality and corporeality of human connection.
