Natalie Ko
Born and raised in Hong Kong, later moved to Canada at the age of 13. Natalie focuses on functional ceramic pieces, such as planters and mugs, with a bit of playfulness added into it. She explores the idea of adding playable/removable pieces to pots and planters so that not only are they decorative, but also fun to play with. She also wants to express different cultures by incorporating food and clothing from different countries. She often creates the characters based on the food and activities that she experienced when she was a child in Hong Kong, giving them a nostalgic feeling. These characters, inspired by animals, are personified through their simple expressions and postures, making them more relatable to us.
Currently, all of her pieces are wheel thrown and hand built. Small details are sculpted onto each piece and any attachments to the character design are also made and fitted at this stage. All details are hand painted with various glazes and are then fired in an electric kiln.
